I came across a news article the other day informing me that this Icelandic guy had just won the title of European champion in powerlifting.
It made me pause, the reason being that as I am secretary of the Icelandic Powerlifting Federation it is my duty to nominate lifters for all championships, European or other. And I hadn´t even heard about this guy!
Reading on, my surprise deepened. It appeared that the meet had taken place here in my own country of Iceland, in the nice little town of Akureyri, and get a load of this: of the 18 or so titles up for grabs Icelanders won 17!!
Now how is that for a colossal success!
I must admit that I am not all that informed about the history of Icelandic sports in general, I do not know the number of Icelanders who have been crowned European champions over the years, regardless of sports discipline. But I am willing to bet that never before have 17 individual Icelanders won this coveted title in one and the same championship. This might even be the first time this happens for ANY country, in ANY sport! This is big news. How is this possible? How did they do it?
Reading on, I discovered their method, and it is truly brilliant. It is a method that they should sell to every young Icelandic athlete carrying the dream of becoming an international champion. It is foolproof. You might call it the do-it-yourself-method of becoming European champion. It might even work to make you a champion of the WORLD! And it will work in any sport.
Say you are a young aspiring skier dreaming to win the title in downhill skiing, this might be the answer for you.
And this is how you do it:
1) resign your membership in your club and your national and international skiing federation.
2) form your own skiing club and name it appropiately
3) rent a hill and put up some poles (it needs to be covered in snow!)
4) announce that you will be hosting the world championships of downhill skiing next friday
5) invite friends and family members to take part
6) make sure YOU win
7) proclaim yourself downhill champion of the world and start celebrating
It is so easy it´s a wonder no one in Iceland has done it before! In swimming for instance. With all these wonderful swimmingpools scattered around the country it would be an easy task to arrange Nordic, European and World championships every year! Imagine all the money saved. In this day and age, the value of the króna being as it is, this is a way to allow Icelandic youth to compete in European championships without ever having to leave the country.
The only precaution you have to take is this:
You have to be absolutely certain that you have resigned from all nationally og internationally recognized sports organisations and federations. This is a must. You don´t want them interfering with what you are doing.
Make sure of that, and then you are set to go.
Become a do-it-yourself champion in no time flat!
